Recently, one of you posted this awesome question on our facebook page: Where can I get (good) layering basics?
If you are like me, sometimes it is the building blocks of a wardrobe that can be the most frustrating to find. It seems like envisioning the look can be easier than actually finding those wardrobe essentials to create with. I doubt Erin & I are the only one that gets stuck on where to find the basics.
We put the question about finding layering tees and basics to the Adornabelle Team and asked the rest of you for your insight on your favorites, and came up with some great options on a variety of places to shop for not only a good layering piece but a good deal as well.
We actually got quite a few different responses to that layering basics question. Here’s a list of the favorites, and a few tips to get you started in your quest to find the layering basics you need to build a successful classic wardrobe.

This is one of my personal favorite places to find layering basics.
If keep your eyes open for sale weekends or end of season markdowns, you can catch some amazing deals on simple tanks and tees and save a lot of money. I’ve seen a number of different kinds of tanks there. Some are super long for the taller ones (or for longer, layered looks!). Some have wide straps that cover bra straps well. Some are lighter weight and good for summertime layering. Lately, there have been some with really pretty details that add a little sparkle to an outfit!
The tanks that I’ve owned have been soft, washed well and been light enough weight that I can wear them even on some of the warmer summer days without getting too overheated.
Several of our readers seemed to have a lot of success shopping for layering basics at Walmart. It seems like what walmart offers varies by your location, and you may not be able to find the same pieces from one store to another. But it can’t hurt to take a browse and see if you can find something that works for you!
A quick peak at my local walmart revealed a variety of longer tanks with wide straps. The quality wasn’t as good as Old Navy, but they could work. I also noticed some cute scoop neck tees with a bit of lace on them that looked like they could work with the right outfits.
I have bought some basic camis at walmart in the past and they’ve been thin and comfortable for wearing under a shirt that needs a little more thickness to hide the bra.
ThredUp or Schoola
I recently wrote a post about my discovery of two online consignment stores.
Since writing that post, I placed my first order with ThredUp. I not only found the cutest dress but picked out a couple of nice layering tanks with a bit of detailing at the neck in a couple colors I had a hard time finding locally. Both of them were under $3 each.
ThredUp had awesome customer service, and the clothes looked and smelled brand new. One of them actually did have the tags still attached, proving that at one point, it had cost someone $12.95 instead of the $2 that I paid for it!
Schoola is not quite as picky about what they sell as ThredUp is. So it pays to check the details and make sure you are getting what you want. But I have found some great, affordable layering options from them as well!
Like the thrift store, it can take a bit of browsing to find what you want in an online consignment store. But since then I’ve eye on the Tanks & Tees section and seen quite a few name brand layering tees and tanks for less than $5. If you are looking for something specific, it may be worth making it a habit to do a quick look at ThredUp and Schoola every once in a while for a good deal on something namebrand. With free returns for both stores, you can hardly go wrong!
I wasn’t surprised when someone mentioned that they like to shop on Amazon.Com for layering tanks and other wardrobe basics! For those of us who have limited options locally, or who can’t just go out and shop at all the stores looking for the perfect tanks, Amazon is a good option. If you are looking for something specific–longer, adjustable straps, and so on, a quick search brings up a variety of styles and brands. And some of the prices are down right decent. It may be less ideal, but if you know what you are looking for, it is certainly worth trying out!
Trina Holden, author of Embracing Beauty, says her favorite place to buy layering essentials is Down East Basics, hands down.
They have a nice variety of fits for tees and camis for decent prices. They wear well, and are super comfortable. They even have a lace over-tee and a demi tee which could be just the thing for creating certain looks. If you don’t want to shop online, you can check and see if there’s a local Down East Basics to check out. They have more than just tees and camis!
A couple of you recommended Rue 21 as a good place to keep an eye out for some layering essentials While Rue 21 might seem a bit trendy for finding classic basics, it actually can be a great place to shop for sales and deals. I’ve gotten some nice, soft tees for just $5 off of a sale rack before. You may need to shop there often in order to find what you are looking for, but if you have one close by–check it out and let us know what you find!
If you are looking for a good basic cami, H&M is another place that got recommended several times. A quick glance revealed a variety of styles–some of them for just $5.95! They have some nice neutrals, too, if you are needing something more versatile.
H&M is another one of those places that offers online and box store locations in several different countries. If you aren’t in the USA and you want to see if they have a location in your area, you can do so here.
- Make a list of the kinds of layering basics you need to complete your outfits before you go shopping. It’ll help you be less overwhelmed as you look for options!
- Layering tanks and tees come in all sorts of colors and styles. Try out different ones to find your perfect match!
- You may not find all your layering basics at one store. You might find the perfect tank at one store and the perfect cami at another.
- The key is if you find something that works for you and the price is right, buy it in a couple neutrals and a few accent colors that you know you will use in your wardrobe. The neutrals will blend outfits together. The accents will help an outfit pop at the right time!
