How to Wear Colored Jeans

If there was ever a fashion trend so awe-inspiring beautiful and fear-inspiring intimidating, it is that of the colored jeans.  Jeans are already painfully hard to choose and purchase (unless you have the perfectly proportioned waist with the perfect length leg with the perfectly sized hips – but who am I kidding? does that model of perfection actually exist?), and then to add bold color to accent the already-complex sizing and fitting and choosing?  Impossible!

But not impossible entirely.  Once you make sure you have purchased a well-fitting pair of colored jeans, you’ll have an instant, easy to to fashion a chic outfit without putting intense thought into the process. (I mean, how easy is it to thrown on jeans and a T? transition to colored jeans? boom. done.)  For the record: my first pair of colored jeans is not the right fit for me.  Even my second pair could use some work to make it as comfortable as a broken-in-denim.  But at least I’m moving in the right direction, right?

Even if you’re feeling ostentatious in your newly purchased colored jeans, wear your outfit with confidence. I remember keenly the self doubt that permeated my first outing in colored jeans — I turned around FOUR times intending to change into something more “normal” and finally (fourth time’s the charm?) mustered enough confidence to make it out the door and to the dinner party where no one noticed my pink jeans except to compliment the look.  The point?  Fake it ’til you make it. Exude confidence until you’re actually confident in your new outfit.

So now you have the jeans and the confidence.  What next?  Style the outfit!  I recommend using the colored pants as the accent and having a neutral color (to mute the jeans) as your top.  A swapping of the norm, right?  But if you are feeling particularly bold and adventurous, use your colored jeans as a neutral (much like you would with your blue denim!) and have the accent color on top.

I have styled my pink jeans both ways — sometimes with a black or gray or tan top, sometimes with a completely unrelated (but not clashing) color for my blouse.  (Photos below.)

Of equal importance to choosing a top, though, lies the problem of choosing shoes. Please, please, please avoid wearing tennis shoes with your colored jeans. Part of the fun of wearing on-trend jeans is the instant spiffiness of a “normal” outfit turned “extra fabulous”. Why put “normal” shoes with “extra fabulous” outfit?

A side note:  you may notice my “mendhi” (aka henna) in these photos.  I was  privileged to attend a Bollywood party where I was gifted with this beautiful temporary artwork on my hand!   Talk about instant conversation starter!
