Not everyone wants to make their own hair gel–even if it is simple! And there is a gel that doesn’t make my curls crinkle, crackle, or crunch.
For as long as I’ve been a fan of the Curly Girl method, I thought my hair was destined to be slightly crunchy everyday after the necessary dose of gel or mousse infused my curls with staying power. I was wrong.
Melinda of The Healthy Farm Girl sells homemade, natural body, facial, and hair products. I tried out her hair gel first and was pleasantly surprised by the results.
Why I Love It
After drying my fresh-from-the-shower head, I squirted some of the Tropical Dream Hair Gel into my hand. It’s slightly more liquid-like than gel-like so I got more than I expected and used too much that first time. I scrunched my curls well then sat down at my desk to write. Within a few minutes, I heard this strange dripping sound–my hair was letting me know I had used too much gel by ridding itself of the excess! So, be warned, with this gel, a little goes a long way (the good news is the bottle will last a while!).
The next day I used less and liked how defined my curls looked immediately after I used the gel. With mousses, my curls seem weighed-down at first (they seem to spring up after they dry). This gel is very lightweight and encourages even wet curls to bounce.
I noticed after my curls dried that they were much softer than they are when I use mousse. No crackle in sight! Another plus is the fruity scent. It’s feminine and sweet without being overwhelming (and it doesn’t attract bees like another fruity hair gel I once tried!).
Why I Recommend It
Looking for something more lightweight than a mousse? Tired of the crunchiness that gels give your hair?
I recommend checking out the hair gels by The Healthy Farm Girl. Not only are they natural and free of harsh chemicals, they smell amazing and will tame your hair into behaving without causing it to crunch.

About Rachelle Rea
Rachelle is an author and editor who would much rather shop for books than for clothes (this must be why malls were invented). Her favorite accessories are a smile and a scarf. Her debut novel releases next year.
I have used generic Paul Mitchel products for years, a combination of three. The Conditioner, (a leave in treatment) Potion 9, followed by Sculpting Lotion. I let air dry for a bit then gently dry with a diffuser. I finger comb or only use a pencil to gently separate curls. I like a soft look, not really a crunchy or wet look. I am almost 58 with long hair, which isn’t usually considered “politically correct” LOL! Long curly hair is alot of work but when random strangers compliment my hair it seems worthwhile. I try to exhibit to younger women that it is OK to embrace their natural hair, even as one ages. I also do not dye my hair, so it is very much salt and pepper! However, if I could discover a great product to eliminate the 3 step process I use now – I would be grateful!
Mrs. Kay, how nice to see you commenting here! And I dearly love your long, curly hair (gals with hair like us have to stick together, right?), so hearing more about your regimen is neat. 🙂 Hope that you get a chance to try out Melinda’s gel!
I cleanse my hair using conditioner and then put gel on it to keep my curls/waves from being frizzy.
I use either mouse or gel…would love to try this product 🙂
I am currently using mousse that I was able to get for $0.50 (price is definitely a factor in my beauty regimen!). Creamy gel can work well, too, though. It is ever evolving journey, though….
Sometimes aussie mousse and sometime a natural gel. I also use coconut oil.
I currently use gel, but being an extremely curly girl, I’ve tried just about everything else. I would love to try some more natural options.
I use nothing except a hair band! My hair is slightly curly – would something like this work for me? Maybe I’d be tempted to leave it down once in a while. 😉
Blessings.
Hair bands rock, Darlene. 😉 Especially on busy days! I hope you get the chance to try some of Melinda’s gel!
At the moment, I mostly use raw honey on my hair – but I rinse most of it out. Sometimes I add a bit of coconut oil.
Most of the time I use alcohol free mousse!
I tried gel at first, when my hair first started going curly/wavy…then I moved on to mousse…but I wasn’t happy with either of those. I just discovered homemade flax seed gel and am LOVING it! Except it would be nice to have something else for the rushed mornings when I realize I have run out and don’t have time to make more!
Right now I am using Suave Argan Oil on my ends to try and rejuvenate how dry my hair is, then I can scrunch or brush straight if desired.
I’ve never tried gel or mousse… I always thought they would weigh my hair down. Also, I thought I would need to wash my hair more often (to wash the product out). I sometimes rub coconut oil on my fingers/hands and run them through my long hair, excluding the hair on my scalp.
Some gels and mousses I’ve tried have indeed weighed down my curls, Rachel, so your concerns are valid. However, I hope you’ll give Melinda’s gel a try–it’s very lightweight and I didn’t have any trouble having it wash right out either. 🙂
I use mousse, and I’m trying out different shampoos/conditioners. I’m doing Curly Girl, but I found a homemade honey shampoo I’ve been trying for the past couple days. Thanks for the giveaway!
Oooo, Amalia, honey shampoo sounds fab! Mind sharing the recipe? 🙂
Here’s the article I found: http://empoweredsustenance.com/diy-honey-shampoo/ I really like it so far!
Yes, we’d love it if you wanted to write about the recipe and how it works for you! 🙂 email adornabelle@gmail.com if you think you’d like to try to write us a guest post on that sometime! 🙂
I’d love too! 🙂 Another friend of mine suggested Apple Cider Vinegar shampoo, or rinse, and I was thinking I would try that too, see how they compare! Maybe I’ll send in a post after Christmas!
