I stumbled into the nursery at Classical Conversation each Tuesday morning last fall, barely put together and dressed for dealing with snotty-nosed toddlers. Yup, baggy jeans and old sweatshirts became a staple. It took several bleary-eyed mornings before I realized that the Moms signing in their children were better dressed than I, yet were dealing with multiple children with poise and modesty. How did they do it?
Rubbing the sleep out of my eyes, I finally figured it out: The Autumn Outfit Uniform.
Dressing up while dressing down, these superheroes (aka mothers of preschoolers) were wearing variations of a theme and were looking unique, cute, chic, AND comfortable.
The Autumn Outfit Formula
- A knee-length dress.
- A cardigan.
- A pair of knit tights.
- A comfortable boot.
The best part of this Autumn Outfit Formula is that you probably have all these pieces in your closet already. Plus, you can sit on the floor with toddlers and remain fully modest (as long as the tights are thick enough). When the autumn day turns warmer, you have two layers to remove comfortably and effortlessly. AND for playground games of Tag, the boots are comfortable and functional.
This outfit has become my go-to favorite in many variations: tights in multiple colors because of mid-season sales, cardigans that can mix-and-match, dresses that easily transition from summer to autumn.
One caution: knit dress and knit tights can create a unique wardrobe malfunction. Finding a dress in a slippery-er material to not ride up against the tights? Highly recommended.
