How to Have {Naturally} Healthy Skin

I love using coconut oil on my skin. It’s natural and it does wonders for my complexion! But there is no way I can simply sit down and tell you to slather coconut oil on your face and voila…all your skin funk is gone! Nope… it just doesn’t work that way. Proactiv and Clearasil may be made for instant fixes, but having healthy, vibrant skin–naturally– goes a lot deeper than just putting something on your face.

Here’s four things you can do to help improve the health of your skin without chemicals and expensive supplements.

How to Have Naturally Healthy Skin

Four Ways to Keep Your Skin Healthy {Naturally}

Drink Water.

You’ve got to drink water. This is one of the biggest keys for having clear, healthy skin! Water flushes toxins from which can cause breakouts and other skin problems from your body. Water keeps your brain functioning properly. That reduces stress and less stress can take care of other skin problems, such as dark circles under the eyes!

Watch what You Eat.

You should be on the lookout for trigger foods. The most popular trigger foods that can effect the health of your skin are sugar, dairy, wheat/gluten and caffeine. So cut back on the sugar, eat a balanced, healthy diet. If you struggle with recurring breakouts, watch what you eat and see if you can discover a trigger hidden in your diet. Sometimes it’s a matter of cutting back and not eliminating, but if you need to–don’t be afraid to try taking a trigger food out of your diet to see if it helps or not!

Beware of Cosmetics.

Most mainstream cosmetics contain a LOT of junk. If you can’t pronounce it or it contains nearly every letter in alphabet, well you may not want to put it on your face. Keeping your skin free of products is best, but if you want to dress up try to find a skin friendly mineral makeup line that you like. (We love Cowgirl Dirt around here!)

Clean it Gently.

A lot of soaps can be pretty hard on your skin. Skin needs natural oils to keep it moist and soft, and soap can dry it out pretty badly. For me, an oil cleansing method works wonderfully!

Here’s how you do it:

  1. You need to get your pores open so you can cleanse them gently. A nice hot shower does the trick!
  2. Choose your oil. I prefer coconut oil, but you could use extra-virgin olive oil, sweet almond oil, or grape seed oil!
Massage the oil into your skin for a few minutes to help loosen blackheads and dead skin.
  3. After you’ve sufficiently massaged, take a wet washcloth, as hot as you can stand it, and lay it over your face. Its works like a steam bath type thing. Keep reheating the towel with hot water and placing it on your face for about 5-10 minutes.
  4. Then just pat dry and you’re done!

I like to follow up my oil cleanse session with a good lotion. You could use a little more coconut oil or some other gentle lotion. I really enjoy Derma E’s lotions, if I want something other than coconut oil!

There are lots of methods and ways to promote healthy skin, naturally. But the best way to keep your skin healthy is to treat your body as a whole. You are a whole being, created fearfully and wonderfully to be in sync and balanced. A balanced body is a happy body. And when your body is happy, your skin is going to show it.
