A book on fashion that encourages you to embrace a little extra weight in childbearing years? I would wholeheartedly support Trina Holden’s new book, Embracing Beauty, for this reason alone!
If I waited until I was at what I consider my ideal weight before trying to address my appearance, I would just give up. And since I hope to be in “baby mode” for the next several years, I need to have some tools to work with.
“As mothers, we are the first to define beauty for our daughters and sons.” (click here to tweet this)
“What styles are flattering to a post-baby tummy?”
“Which ones work well for nursing?”
“Are there wardrobe basics that will grow and shrink with my ever-changing size?”
Trina does a great job at answering these questions and more in Embracing Beauty. But first she tackles the topics at the very foundation of the matter: Why should we pursue beauty in the first place? Is it okay to want to be attractive? What attitude should we have toward our bodies? And most importantly, what is God’s heart when it comes to beauty? (Hint: He created a beautiful world!)
“Beauty is something God can’t not be, and beauty is something He can’t not create.” (click here to tweet this)
I think the single best gift I received from Embracing Beauty was hope.
Hope that I don’t have to look less-than-great because I’m not at my ideal weight.
Hope that even a fashion-challenged woman like me can figure this stuff out (see the section “become a copycat”).
Hope that this could actually be affordable (see the wonderful section on thrift store shopping!).
Hope that I can do all this to the glory of God (see… oh, the whole book).
“I’ve come to realize that what I wear is more than just a barrier between my body and the public, but can actually be a testimony to all I believe about beauty and its Creator.”
This book will help you realize that as well, and help you learn how to better share that testimony with other women in your life. The good news is that this book isn’t just helpful for mothers only! There are tips and ideas in there that can be applied to a wide range of needs, and it is worth the read. And reading this before you have children of your own will give you the tools to face the changes of your body with confidence and grace.

About Jeannie
A fashion-challenged wavy/curly girl, I write from my 130 year old cottage in southern Illinois. I love Jesus, my husband and toddler girl, and all things natural.
The book sounds great! Embracing beauty for me sometime just means a little intentional effort – in appearance, around the house, food presentation, etc.
I can already tell this is a very good book…even for girls that have yet to get baby curves 🙂
Simply organizing my home brings beauty to my days.
I embrace beauty by curling my hair a little extra and adding a little gloss to my lips. It makes me feel beautiful. Lastly, I look in the mirror and say “I’m a daughter to the King of Kings” it makes me feel like a princess! PS I just found out about this book via twitter. I’m really excited!!!
By focusing on the little “gifts” that God gives me each day. Looking for the positive or the best in every situation! Rejoicing in God’s creation and His beauty!
Embracing beauty for me is finding the little things I can do in a few minutes to lift my spirits. The other day it was simply putting a hair clip in my hair as opposed to letting it hang.
I try and focus on the positives, seeing the beauty even in hard days. It really makes life so much for beautiful and cheerful!
I embrace beauty in my every day life by matching my earrings to my shirt. My husband always notices and comments when I do this, so it is a good deal all around.
I try to surround myself with little things that make me happy…a pretty picture, a ceramic bird I love, etc. In my wardrobe…well, I haven’t figured that part out yet. 😛
Ahh, Jeannie–thanks for sharing what the book meant to you! This was a treat to read.
What a review of Embracing Beauty! I don’t know if I can beat this one! 🙂
I loved this line “Hope that I can do all this to the glory of God (see… oh, the whole book).” That was one thing I wasn’t fully expecting the book to do.
