I have the privilege of working in a place where fashion and a knowledge of styles and trends is key to the success of our business. Just over the short time that I’ve worked there, I’ve learned so much about how to put an outfit together and how to pay attention to the trends that come out. Basically its all about knowing what’s out there and how to incorporate that into your own personal style preferences.
There are some pretty basic things to look for when putting together your seasonal outfits. Here are some tips to help add some pizzazz to your winter wardrobe!
Especially if you live where the snow falls during the winter months, boots are essential. Even the tiniest bit of traction can give the needed stability on icy sidewalks, and paired with the gorgeous styles that have come out in the recent years, you get the perfect combination of fashion, warmth and safety.
A nice pair of tall, knee length boots can go a long way. Wear with warm leggings and shorter dress, or tuck your jeans in them and throw on a fluffy sweater! The options are endless.
Are you a short girl who isn’t sure boots will work for you? Look out for a post by Rachelle coming this month on boots for a short girl’s wardrobe!
Let’s talk about cardigans. Those cute little button up sweaters that seem to dip in and out of the fashion world. This year I have noticed a plethora of really cute, classic looking ones coming out. Animal prints, lace trimmed, argyle patterned…you name it. These little darlings are perfect for the ever popular style of layering. For instance, a lace trimmed camisole under a low cut short-sleeved top with a cardigan buttoned half way up or left open is a simple, classy look that works well for school, work, church or just running errands!
The Sweater Dress
Ah yes. The Sweater Dress. My sister asked for one for Christmas, and I had tons of fun finding her one! This can be a great look, paired with matching or contrasting leggings, tall boots and a wide belt. There are several different styles of the sweater dress, but I have come to the conclusion that “the perfect one” should be short sleeved and no longer than knee length. But that’s just my opinion. 🙂
Scarves and Accessories
Scarves are warm, easy, inexpensive and can add the perfect touch to the simplest outfit! There are many adorable ways to tie them, but even just the quickest wrap can took amazing! You can dress up a completely plain shirt with a nice patterned scarf, or a patterned shirt with a solid scarf. Any way you do will be sure to give you a wonderful way to add a lovely touch to any outfit.
Scarves are on the top of the accessory list, followed closely by fun jewelry! The popular styles are big, chunky necklaces with lots of bling, multiple bracelets, statement or stackable rings, and lots of others. Some things you really have to have the right personality and outfit to pull off, but other things are versatile enough to suit anyone.
I personally have come to love long droopy necklaces that hit about bust length. They go well under a well tied scarf or with the layered look…or just about anything! Check out this post about beaded necklaces for even more ideas! A classic string of pearls is also a really lovely way to accessorize.
Colors and Patterns
Every season, there are certain colors and patterns that take the world by storm. Over the summer, teal was the hot color that everyone seemed to be wearing, and chevrons made their way into our lives with a bang. This winter, grey is the color to focus on, and people are still loving chevrons, as well as the houndstooth.
I love the grey movement. It is warm and inviting, and being more of a neutral, it can be paired with almost any color! It is wonderfully versatile and makes a great base to build off of.
A word on chevrons: use sparingly. I fear them becoming the bell bottoms, shag carpet and mullets of the future! They can look great, but with much moderation.
Have fun with your winter wardrobe!
