I’ve decided the difference between good conditioner and cheap brands is not as much in how my hair looks right after it dries, but how frizzy it is after I’m out in the wind or sleep on my curls. When I tried out MopTop’s line, I found that not only did I have great looking, gently defined curls, but I could wear my curls two days in a row—with no washing, no frizz!
But honestly, the thing that excited me the most about the MopTop product line is the philosophy of the company behind it.
From the moment I heard Kelly’s voice on the other end of the line during our interview, I could tell that she had a vivacious personality to match her curls. As we talked, I discovered that she is passionate about being a mom, studying God’s Word through Bible Study Fellowship, and helping people learn to love wearing their hair how God created it.
I’m delighted to be able to share with you here on Adornabelle the interview that first appeared on Kindred Grace back in 2010.
If you’ve got curl, try MopTop! It’s all about natural curl, natural beauty.
an interview with MopTop “unruly hair care”
founder Kelly Foreman of MopTopHair.com
Gretchen Louise: How did you first discover the curly potential of your hair?
Kelly Foreman: Growing up with the nicknames of “Fuzzy,” “Brillo,” and “Mop Top”! When my middle child turned two, I realized she had my hair. And I prayed, “Please, please Lord, don’t let her have all of this frizzy hair that I have.” I started reading everything I could find, interviewing stylists with hair I liked, stylists whose hair I didn’t like. Anything to help my daughter keep from enduring what I had.
When did you decide to start a hair care products company?
I just started mixing stuff up in my kitchen. And sometimes, it was a disaster—like with one defining moisturizing cream. One hot humid summer day, I was driving my daughter to a birthday party, when I wondered what the terrible smell was in the car. And suddenly I realized, it was my hair!
It got to the point where I felt like I really had to do it—to market the things I’d come up with. I called two girlfriends in the cosmetic industry to ask if they knew anybody who could make some samples. They both recommended the same lab. After a year in research and development, MopTop was born.
It is such an absolute blessing and joy. I can’t even begin to tell you how God has been so faithful to put the right people in the right place at the right time. We are a baby business but it is amazing how it has boomed. I love what I do.
What is your focus now that you’ve developed your product line?
“Frizz intervention.” We teach stylists how to cut or texture curly and wavy hair. We have workshops showing people how to take care of their hair.
One time, I heard a little girl in the front say, “Mom, I don’t want to be here. I just want straight hair. Can we go look at wigs?”
It just broke my heart. I said, “Honey, can I show you some pictures of me as a little girl?”
And let me tell you, they weren’t even the worst photos. But she realized that there might be hope for hair like hers, as I asked if I could show her how to condition her hair.
She walked out of there two feet taller. That is why I do this.
What would you tell someone who thinks they might have a bit of curly hair, or perhaps is just frustrated with the frizz and doesn’t believe there’s any curl under all that frizz?
It’s not just about curly hair or managing curly hair. It’s about frizz and managing frizz.
- Start reading labels. Find shampoo with no sulfates (we use a derivative of coconut in ours, for a gentle cleaner). Avoid silicones and waxes and alcohol in styling products.
- Use a t-shirt instead of a towel to dry your hair.
- Try our travel kit. Everyone who tries it calls me back for a bigger bottle of everything. If you have questions, please ask us.
Tell me about your family. Are they involved in your business?
They help me try new products. They wrap up products. They help me with mailings. Everything they can do, they do.
What have you learned about business and success through MopTop?
Stay focused on your passion. Don’t chase money—you’ll never catch it. Figure out who you are and what you’re passionate about.
Now I try to focus more on who my customer is and how to simplify my message. I pray over everything. It’s the first time in my life that I have completely handed over something in my life and said, “This will be whatever you would have it be.” I don’t have to know where we’re going. It doesn’t matter what I plan—if it’s not His will it won’t keep moving forward.
What makes MopTop products better than the others out there on the market?
With our products your hair feels soft and natural like hair should feel—not stiff, crunchy, oily, waxy or weighed down by product. We’re not the cheapest product out there, nor are we the most expensive. We provide the greatest value for what you get. We’re about the quality of the product.
Any suggestions for those of us curly girls who cut our own curls?
I have cut my own hair for the past 2 years. The challenge with doing your own hair is you can not really see the back well. I cut my hair dry, curl clump by curl clump. When the ends seem too thin and pointy, I cut the curl clump straight across.
Most curlies will not need to get their hair cut more than a couple of times per year. You can at least keep the strays at bay in between cuts. But when you do get it cut, find someone you can trust. NaturallyCurly.com has a place on their site where clients can review their stylists—it’s subjective, and thus not a perfect system, but it’s a good start.
What is the most important thing you’ve learned about beauty through your MopTop experience?
It’s not about vanity at all. It’s about embracing how you’re created, then going on and doing whatever else you’re called to do.
So many times when we do frizz interventions, people of all ages are totally sold out that they have to look like the rest of the world, how the magazines say they have to look. That’s the hardest challenge and they’re probably in the most painful situations. I have found that the women who try to look like someone they are not aren’t as happy and they don’t look as good. But if you can get them to stop long enough to really take a look at and try and embrace how they are created, the transformations are so amazing. God doesn’t make us fakes. How you are created is very much a part of your personality, who you are. Don’t get hung up on it. I’m not saying that you can’t wear your hair straight if you so choose. It’s not that it’s not nice to put on a little makeup or get a new lip gloss. But we don’t need to make a permanent change to alter ourselves. There are no mistakes in the way we are created. We don’t have to be anything we are not.
I finally feel comfortable in my skin. And if I can help my daughters or other people feel that then, wow—to get to take part in that is just amazing.
My goal is to empower everyone I can to embrace exactly how they are created.

How to Use MopTop
If you’ve been using products containing silicon or sulfates, be sure to “clarify” your curls with a bit of baking soda, lemon juice, or apple cider vinegar before trying out the MopTop products.
